Composite materials, such as fibre reinforced plastics and sandwich panels, have considerable potential for use in the next generation of public transport structures. They are lightweight, durable, non-corrosive, high fire and smoke resistant and readily moulded to shape. These properties reduce the energy consumption of mass public transport vehicles. Typical end-uses in modern high speed trains, trams and metros are: train floors, interior parts, tables, outer parts incl. nose, doors etc.
